Washington journalism is in a moment of generational change. We’re rising to meet it.
Welcome to The Washington Sun.
We launched two years ago as NOTUS, a news site focused on national politics and policy. But as we watched others pull back on Washington coverage, we knew our hometown deserved better. So we invested — more than doubling the size of our newsroom in just six months.
We’ve added local reporting from Martin Austermuhle, Jenny Gathright, Michael Brice-Saddler, Zara Norman and Shamira Muhammad, columns from Dana Milbank, Matt K. Lewis and Thomas Boswell, food coverage from Tom Sietsema and weather forecasts from what used to be called the Capital Weather Gang. We hired Paul Kane and Kadia Goba to join the best congressional reporting team in D.C., Jeff Stein to cover economic policy, and Elena Schneider on politics. We’ve added reporters to cover federal agencies and law enforcement, we’re building out our teams for breaking news and features, and we now have more staff reporters covering local sports than anyone else in the DMV.
Our work puts Washington front and center, and we wanted our name to do the same. So NOTUS — short for News of the United States — is now The Washington Sun.
Why The Sun? You can choose your metaphor: We’re shining a light on Washington. Everything is clearer in daylight. And we’d rather light a big candle than keep on cursing the darkness.
We cover politics and policy and the people who shape life in Washington — not just at the White House and in Congress, but at the Wilson Building, at Northwest Stadium and in the neighborhoods where we live.
We report for the people who live here, the people who make policy here, and the people around the world who care deeply about what happens here. We do it with original reporting, with deep sourcing and with an unwavering commitment to accuracy.
And we do it with a newsroom unlike any other in Washington, bringing together veteran journalists and some of the country’s most promising up-and-coming reporters — individuals from different regions, backgrounds and beliefs who have come to D.C. as fellows at the Allbritton Journalism Institute.
We’ve got the financial backing of Robert Allbritton, the founding publisher of POLITICO. We’re supported by advertisers who buy ads on our website and sponsor our newsletters, podcasts and events — and by paid subscriptions from readers who value what we do. We’re grateful to everyone who makes our work possible, but our editorial decisions are entirely our own.
